The TSS gave their first performance at the Swedish National Day celebrations in June 1990. Since this debut, the choir has grown in numbers and we now have more than 30 members who participate regularly in our concerts and performances.

Our repertoire is focussed on Swedish choral traditions but is quite eclectic – ranging from traditional to contemporary and sacred to secular. We perform mainly Swedish songs but also sing in other languages (seven to date).

Our annual Christmas Concert and Spring Concert have become traditions in the community. They are our opportunity to share the richness of Swedish music, present talented soloists and enjoy the company of our guests at a reception following each concert. In November each year, the TSS participates in the SWEA Christmas Fair in Toronto along with the folkdancers. This is definitely a highlight of our year!!

The TSS enjoys a close collaboration with the Swedish Lutheran Church in Toronto and the choir sings at special services and celebrations. In March 2010 and March 2011 we also presented Schubert’s Deutsche Messe which provided the framework for the worship service. In May 2011 we participated in a worship service at the Swedish Ambassador’s residence in Ottawa. After this service, we presented a program of music and dance during the reception.

The TSS has had the pleasure of singing with other choirs in recent years. We have participated twice in the Toronto Conference Concert, a celebration of multiculturism through music. We also collaborated with the Danish Choir to present Schubert’s Deutsche Messe in a massed choir.

We have enjoyed participating in a range of community activities since our inception. Opportunities to sing at many different events broadens our perspectives and is a lot of fun. We have presented Swedish music at various festivals held in the city, such as Christmas Around the World, Finn Grand Fest and the Toronto Nordic Fair. We have traveled to the Swedish Church in New York City and the Scandinavian Folk Festival held annually in Jamestown, N.Y. In July 2011 we enjoyed very enthusiastic audiences for our performances.<

A very special honour was singing at the Lieutenant Governor’s Levée on January 1, 2010 at Queen’s Park. This was a terrific way to start the year!

The TSS has recorded a Christmas CD which is available through our website. This is a collection of mainly traditional Swedish music, both choral and instrumental.
