The TSFS now has the only dance group in Canada whose focus remains traditional Swedish folkdancing. Over the years we have had the pleasure of performing for a range of audiences in many different locations and countries.
The folkdancers had their very first performance in 1982 at the SWEA Christmas Fair in Toronto. To this day, we continue to participate in this annual event at Harbourfront. Another highlight of our year is the Midsummer Day celebration where we enjoy performing and sharing traditional Swedish dances. Folkdance has also been included in the Swedish church services on occasions such as outdoor worship in September and Swedish National Day in June. Recently, the folkdance mass has been an integral part of the National Day celebration.
We have had the great honour of dancing for King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Sylvia during a visit to Toronto. The folkdancers were part of the entertainment at the millennial anniversary celebrations for the arrival of the Viking Ships in Halifax. We were delighted to perform during the Quebec Winter Carnival the year that Sweden was featured. We have entertained at the European Trade Fair and other corporate events such as IKEA openings and special celebrations. In December 2010, we were invited to dance at the Toronto Christmas Market. This event was so successful in its inaugural year that it is expected to become a tradition in our city and we look forward to continued involvement.
Our activities have also included participation in many folk festivals in North America and Europe. We have enjoyed performing at the Scandinavian Folk Festival in Jamestown, N.Y., Finn Grand Fest and the Toronto Nordic Fair. Since 1997, we have travelled to Scandinavia to attend Nordlek festivals, which are organized every three years. Nordlek provides the opportunity to attend dance workshops and network with other folkdance groups. Participants in the festival learn a repertoire of Scandinavian dances which are presented on the closing day. The experience of performing alongside thousands of dancers has been truly unique and exciting for us and we are looking forward to Nordlek in Steinkjaer, Norway (2012).
Collaboration with other groups helps to enrich our dancing. Since 2000, we have enjoyed companionship and dancing with Burlöv Folkdansgille at Nordlek. We have also had the pleasure of hosting Spånga Folkdansgille here in Toronto. We often join with the Sisu Folkdancers and the Toronto Danish Folkdancers to perform at events such as Run for the Cure every fall.
Newcomers to the group are always welcome! You do not need any prior dance experience. For information or questions about joining TSFS, please send us an e-mail.
